A value pick, or +EV pick, is a bet whose odds are higher than the fair odds of the outcome: the consensus price of the worldwide betting market, with no sportsbook margin in it. A regular pick tells you who will win; a value pick tells you at what price the bet is worth taking. If a sportsbook pays +124 (2.24) on an outcome whose fair odds are +100 (2.00), you hold an expected edge of 12% on every dollar staked, an edge that shows over many bets, not on one.
What is the difference between a regular pick and a value pick?
A regular pick is an opinion about the result: "the home team wins", "over 2.5 goals". It often comes without a price, or with the price of a single sportsbook, and it is judged by how often it hits.
A value pick starts from the price. First you estimate what the outcome is really worth (the fair odds), then you look for a sportsbook that pays more. Whether the outcome is likely or unlikely does not matter: what matters is that the price on offer is above the fair odds. An outcome with a 30% chance priced at +300 (4.00) is a better bet than one with a 70% chance priced at -286 (1.35).
That is why a good value pick always carries a threshold: "value at +112 (2.12) or better". Below that price the edge is gone, even though the outcome is the same.
How do you calculate the value of a price?
- Read the fair odds. They are the consensus price of the worldwide betting market for the outcome, with no margin. MarketOdds shows them for every selection.
- Compare the sportsbook's odds. In decimal: value = sportsbook odds ÷ fair odds − 1. At 2.24 and 2.00: 2.24 ÷ 2.00 − 1 = +12%. With American odds, convert first (+124 is 2.24, -110 is 1.909).
- Check the threshold. The minimum value price is the fair price itself: at +100 the value is zero, below it the bet is -EV.
- Stake small and flat. A small, constant share of your bankroll (1-2% is the starting point in the Bankroll and Kelly guide), because value bets lose often too.
- Log every bet. The Bet Tracker measures return and turnover over time: value is judged over hundreds of bets, not over a week.
A round-number example: 100 bets of $10 at +124 on outcomes worth +100 have an expected profit of $120 (12% of $1,000). The actual result of those 100 bets can still end in a loss: Betting variance: why does a +EV bet still lose? explains why.
Does value actually work? What members have recorded
Since August 2024 NinjaBet members have logged the ValueBets they place in the Bet Tracker. The ValueBet results page adds them all up, losses included, across every NinjaBet site. These are the figures published on October 16, 2026 (settled straight bets, voids excluded):
| Period | Settled bets | Return on turnover | Profitable months |
|---|---|---|---|
| August-December 2024 | 5,433 | +6.17% | 5 of 5 |
| 2025 | 8,012 | +8.54% | 11 of 12 |
| January-October 15, 2026 | 8,348 | +17.50% | 9 of 10 |
| Total | 21,793 | +9.59% | 25 of 27 |
These are numbers members entered themselves, not audited one by one, and 2026 is above the period's average. They do show something a regular pick cannot: the return on turnover of thousands of bets chosen for their price, month by month, with the two losing months (September 2025 and January 2026) left in.
Why does a pick without a price have no edge?
Because the same outcome can be a good bet or a bad one depending on the odds. "Over 2.5" at -111 (1.90) can be +EV if the fair odds are -125 (1.80); at -143 (1.70) on the same outcome you lose 5.6% of every stake on average.
The same goes for a win rate: hitting 70% of picks at an average of -250 (1.40) returns 0.70 × 1.40 − 1 = −2%. At -250 you need to win 71.4% just to break even. A win rate without the odds taken tells you nothing, and it is the first check in How do you verify a tipster or handicapper?

Frequently asked questions
Does a value pick win more often than a regular pick?
Not necessarily. It wins as often as its probability says: an outcome with fair odds of +200 (3.00) hits about one time in three. The edge is in the price you collect when it wins, not in how often it wins.
How much edge do you need to place a bet?
Any positive edge is an advantage, but prices move and the estimate has a margin of error: many members filter ValueBet from +2-3% up. The How ValueBet works guide explains how to pick a threshold.
Where do the fair odds come from?
From the consensus price of the worldwide betting market: the market's collective sentiment on an outcome, with no sportsbook margin in it. The full answer is in the help center: Do value bets work?
Can you use value in parlays?
Yes, if every leg of the parlay is +EV: the edges multiply, and so does the variance. The Parlays in ValueBet guide shows when it makes sense.
Do sportsbooks limit people who bet value?
They can: accounts that beat their prices regularly often get lower maximum stakes. The Profiling and account limitations guide and How do you avoid getting limited by sportsbooks? cover the habits that may help.
Is it a sure way to make money?
No. Value bets do not hedge the outcomes: you win and you lose, and the edge only shows over many bets. It takes capital, discipline and time, and no result is ever certain.
