Hedge calculator: how much to bet on the other side

Enter the stake and odds of the bet you already placed and the odds now available on the opposite outcome: the hedge calculator gives the stake that guarantees the same profit whoever wins, or the smaller stake that only gets your money back if your bet loses. It works for futures and for the last leg of a parlay too.

Odds format

How to use the calculator

  1. 1

    Enter your open bet

The stake and the odds of the bet you placed. For a parlay, use the parlay's total odds.

  2. 2

    Enter the hedge odds

The price on the opposite outcome, at the same or another sportsbook.

  3. 3

    Choose how to hedge

Equal profit locks the same result whoever wins; break even keeps the upside and just covers your stake.

Worked example

You bet $100 on the Eagles at +500 to win the division. Late in the season the Cowboys are +130 (2.30). Hedging $260.87 on the Cowboys locks $239.13 of profit whoever wins. To only protect your $100, a $76.92 hedge breaks even if the Cowboys win and leaves $423.08 of profit if the Eagles do.

Frequently asked questions

What is hedging a bet?

Placing a second bet on the opposite outcome of a bet you already have, so part of the profit is locked whatever happens. It gives up some upside in exchange for certainty.

How do I hedge the last leg of a parlay?

Enter the parlay stake, the parlay's total odds and the odds against the last leg. The equal-profit stake guarantees the same profit whether the last leg wins or loses.

Should I always hedge?

Not by default: the hedge bet carries the vig, so over many bets hedging costs money. It makes sense when the amount at stake matters to you or the hedge price has value.

What is the difference between hedging and arbitrage?

An arbitrage (surebet) covers every outcome at prices that guarantee a profit from the start. A hedge is placed later, when the odds have moved in your favor; the SureBet calculator handles arbitrage.

Can I hedge with a prediction market?

Yes: buy the contract on the opposite outcome. Enter its price in cents in the odds converter to get the decimal odds, then use them here as the hedge odds.
