What is a surebet?: One margin, every outcome

A surebet, also called an arb, is a set of bets on every outcome of a game, placed at different sportsbooks, that leaves the same positive margin whatever the result. It appears when the best prices on each outcome, turned into implied probabilities, add up to less than 100%: +108 (2.08) and +100 (2.00) on the two sides add up to 98.1%, a margin of 1.96% on the total staked. Surebets are real: they last minutes, are worth a few percent and carry specific risks.

How does a surebet work, step by step?

  1. Find the best price on each outcome, at different sportsbooks licensed in your state. The SureBet scanner keeps comparing prices and lists only the combinations with a positive margin.
  2. Add up the implied probabilities: for each price in decimal, 1 ÷ odds. At 2.08 and 2.00: 0.4808 + 0.5000 = 0.9808, or 98.08%.
  3. Work out the margin: 1 ÷ sum − 1. Here 1 ÷ 0.9808 − 1 = +1.96%. Above 100% there is no surebet.
  4. Split the stake: on each outcome, stake total × (1 ÷ odds) ÷ sum, so the payout is the same whichever side wins. The SureBet calculator does it for you.
  5. Place every leg right away, one after the other: the margin exists only while the prices are there.
  6. Check that every bet was accepted at the price and stake you planned before you treat the play as done.

A worked example: a two-way and a three-way surebet

Example prices, October 2026, with $100 in total. The sportsbooks are shown as letters: the prices that form a surebet change from one minute to the next.

SurebetOutcomeSportsbookOddsStakePayout if it wins
Total over/under 2.5 goals
margin +1.96%
Over 2.5A+108 (2.08)$49.02$101.96
Under 2.5B+100 (2.00)$50.98$101.96
Soccer 3-way moneyline
margin +2.31%
HomeA+160 (2.60)$39.35$102.31
DrawB+270 (3.70)$27.65$102.31
AwayC+210 (3.10)$33.00$102.31

In the first case you finish +$1.96 whatever happens; in the second, +$2.31. The margin is locked the moment every leg is accepted, and it stays locked as long as no sportsbook voids its bet.

Why do surebets exist?

Every sportsbook sets its own lines, with its own hold, its own models and its own customers. Lines update at different moments: when news or a wave of bets moves the price at one sportsbook, the others can follow minutes later. A sportsbook taking heavy action on one side shortens that price and lengthens the other to balance its book. Across thousands of games a day, those gaps produce combinations below 100% every day.

They don't last, because the first sportsbook to notice the gap moves its line. That is why surebets are found with a scanner that reads prices in real time, not by hand. The same logic, applied to pairs with a small positive hold, is behind low-hold betting.

How much does a surebet make?

Surebets usually leave 1-3% of the total staked per play. What you make depends on how many plays you complete and how much capital you keep spread across your sportsbook accounts, because every leg needs a balance already sitting in the right account. The free How much can you earn with SureBet? guide runs the numbers for different bankrolls.

What is the difference between a surebet and matched betting?

Matched betting starts from a sportsbook promo and accepts a small cost to unlock it; a surebet uses no promo and profits from the price gap between sportsbooks. The full comparison, with worked numbers for both, is in Arbitrage betting vs matched betting.

What are the risks of a surebet?

The margin is only locked if every leg stays valid. The real risks are a price that moves before the last leg, a bet voided as an obvious (palpable) error, sportsbooks settling the same market under different rules, rounded stakes and account limits. They are covered one by one, with numbers, in Why can a surebet lose?

Frequently asked questions

Are surebets legal in the US?

Betting both sides at licensed sportsbooks is legal where sports betting is legal, each bet in its own account. Sportsbooks can, however, limit or close accounts that do it often, under their terms.

How long does a surebet last?

Usually from a few seconds to a few minutes: as long as it takes the sportsbook with the off-market price to move its line. That is why it pays to have your accounts open and funded.

Do you need a big bankroll?

You need it spread across several sportsbooks, because you don't know in advance which account a play will need. You can start with a few hundred dollars; more accounts and more capital mean more plays.

What is a middle?

A pair of bets on different lines (for example over 2.5 at one sportsbook and under 3.5 at another) that costs little if only one side wins and pays both if the result lands in between. The Middles tool finds them.

Why can't you build a surebet at a single sportsbook?

Because every sportsbook builds a hold into its own prices: the implied probabilities of its own market always add up to more than 100%.

Do sportsbooks limit surebet players?

Often, yes: surebets target exactly the prices a sportsbook has set wrong. The Account limitations in SureBet guide and How do you avoid getting limited by sportsbooks? explain how to manage your accounts.
