Matched betting in the US: what is it, how does it work and how much can you make? (2026)
The method explained with American odds and a ProphetX cover, what to expect in your first 30 days and what you need to start
Matched betting turns the promotions of licensed US sportsbooks into cash by covering every outcome of a bet: you back one side at the sportsbook and the opposite side on a prediction market such as ProphetX, or at a second sportsbook, so the result does not depend on who wins. With $100–$300 of capital and 1–2 hours a day, most NinjaBet users make $200–$500 a month in their first months. Results vary: it takes time, capital and attention to each promotion's terms.

What is matched betting?
Matched betting is a method that uses the promotions of licensed sportsbooks (welcome offers, bonus bets, profit boosts, refunds) to produce a profit that does not depend on the result of the game. The principle is simple: every bet you place at a sportsbook is covered with a bet on the opposite outcome somewhere else. Cover all the outcomes and win and loss cancel each other out; what is left is the value of the bonus, minus a small covering cost.
In Europe the cover is a "lay" bet on a betting exchange. In the United States there is no lay betting in that sense: the cover is a second back bet on the opposite side of a two-way market (moneyline in a sport without ties, spread, totals), placed on a prediction market such as ProphetX or at a second sportsbook. NinjaBet calls this back-back: the Dutcher finds the pairs of prices and the calculator sizes both bets.
It is not gambling in the usual sense: you are not guessing who wins, you are executing a calculation. It is not a loophole either: the bonus arrives only if you meet the sportsbook's terms (qualifying stake, minimum odds, expiry), and every operation needs care. People who do it methodically complete the welcome offers of the sportsbooks in their state first and then live off recurring promotions.
On NinjaBet you will find the Matched Betting product page, the free guide What is Matched Betting? and the tools that do the math for you.
How does matched betting work in the US, step by step?
The cycle of a welcome offer is always the same, whatever the sportsbook.
- Open an account on the prediction market and at the sportsbook. ProphetX is the prediction market NinjaBet.com is built around: since June 2026 it operates nationwide under federal regulation (it is a CFTC-designated contract market, not a state-licensed sportsbook) and accepts users from 18. The sportsbook is the one of the offer (bet365, FanDuel, BetRivers and the others in the offers section): it is licensed state by state, you must be 21 or older in almost every state and physically located in a state where it is licensed when you bet. Both verify your identity (ID, a selfie and your Social Security number): do it before you deposit.
- Place the qualifying bet. You deposit the required amount and bet at the sportsbook; at the same time you back the opposite outcome on ProphetX or at a second sportsbook. The Dutcher compares the prices of every sportsbook on the two sides of the same game and shows you the pair where the cover costs least (the "rating").
- Receive the bonus. The sportsbook credits the bonus bet according to its rules: at once, within 72 hours or in instalments. Every offer card on NinjaBet says when it arrives and how it must be used.
- Bet the bonus and cover it. A bonus bet returns the winnings only, never the stake, so you place it at long odds (+300 or longer) and back the opposite side on the prediction market. Whatever the result, you cash out around 65–75 % of the bonus bet's value in real money.
- Withdraw, log it and move to the next offer. The capital is available again once the game settles. You record the operation in the Bet Tracker and open the next sportsbook.
A worked example in American odds (ProphetX commission included)
ProphetX charges a commission on net winnings only (about 2 %); the figures below already include it. Take an offer of the type "bet $10, get $150 in bonus bets", active on ninjabet.com on September 28, 2026 in 16 states.
Qualifying bet. You bet $10 on Team A's moneyline at −110 (1.91) at the sportsbook. On ProphetX you back Team B at +105 (2.05) with $9.41.
| Result | Sportsbook | ProphetX | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| Team A wins | +$9.09 | −$9.41 | −$0.32 |
| Team B wins | −$10.00 | +$9.68 ($9.88 − 2 %) | −$0.32 |
The qualifying bet costs $0.32 whatever happens: that is the price of unlocking the bonus bet.
Bonus bet. You place the $150 bonus bet on Team C at +300 (4.00) and back Team D on ProphetX at −330 (1.30) with $346.98. With a bonus bet the stake is not returned, so a long price is the right choice.
| Result | Sportsbook (bonus bet) | ProphetX | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| Team C wins | +$450.00 | −$346.98 | +$103.02 |
| Team D wins | $0 | +$103.04 ($105.15 − 2 %) | +$103.04 |
Total for the offer: about +$102.70 (103.03 − 0.32), roughly 68 % of the bonus bet's value, and the $347 placed on ProphetX comes back once the game settles. You do not have to do this math by hand: the matched betting calculator tells you how much to bet on the second side and what you make, and the Dutcher ranks the games by rating.

What is a prediction market, and why cover on ProphetX?
A prediction market is a peer-to-peer platform where users bet against each other instead of against the house. You post an order at your own price, in American odds, and it fills when another user takes the other side. There is no vig built into the price and the commission is small (on ProphetX, 2 % on net gains per market), which is why its prices are usually the best cover available. Technically each market is an event contract, priced in American odds, that pays out if the outcome happens; ProphetX has been a federally regulated contract market since June 2026. There is no lay betting with a liability as on a European exchange: to bet against an outcome you take the opposite side of the market, which is a back bet on the other outcome and exactly what the back-back method needs.
| Feature | Prediction market (ProphetX) | Traditional sportsbook |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the price | The users, order by order | The sportsbook, with its margin built in |
| Who you bet against | Other users | The house |
| Cost | Commission on net winnings only | The margin in every price |
| Liquidity matters | Yes: an order fills only if someone takes the other side | No: the sportsbook accepts the bet up to its limits |
| Betting against an outcome | By backing the opposite side of the market (no lay with liability) | By backing the other team, if the sportsbook prices it |
Three things to know before your first order. Liquidity: only bet where the money available at your price is larger than your stake, or the order stays pending or partially filled (see My ProphetX order is pending or only partially filled). No cash-out: a filled order stands until the game settles. Availability: ProphetX is live nationwide under its federal registration (Nevada is reported as the one excluded state at the time of writing; the app tells you when you sign up), while state challenges to sports event contracts are still before the courts, see the legal guide below. If you cannot open an account, cover at a second sportsbook instead: the Dutcher works exactly the same way; the rating is usually a little lower because both prices include a sportsbook margin, and there is no commission. How much can you make with matched betting?
There are two phases with different numbers. The first is the welcome offers: on September 28, 2026 NinjaBet.com lists 10 welcome offers across 21 states, and the ones available in a single state are worth about $600–$1,500 of expected profit in total, each with its own card (what you need, expected profit, difficulty). You complete them once, and they are also the phase in which you learn every strategy: qualifying bet, bonus bet, refund, profit boost, parlay.
The second phase is the recurring promotions that sportsbooks send to existing customers: profit boosts, bonus bets on the weekend games, refunds on a losing bet, parlay insurance. Here the result depends on how many you follow: $200–$500 a month is what most users report in their first months, with 30–45 minutes a day once you know the tools. The free guide How much can you earn with Matched Betting? and the page Make money online have the detail.
Your first 30 days: what to expect
A realistic path with the welcome offers active today, in order of difficulty. Expected profits are the ones published on the NinjaBet.com offer cards on September 28, 2026; "capital in play" is the money temporarily tied up between deposits and cover bets, which comes back when the games settle. Which offers you can use depends on your state: filter the offers page by location.
| Week | What you do | Offers (expected profit per card) | Capital in play | Expected profit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Open ProphetX and the first two sportsbooks, learn the Dutcher and the calculator with the free offer | Free offer of the free dashboard ($100–$140), bet365 Bet $10 Get $150 ($70–$110), Bally Bet Bet $10 Get $50 ($30–$40) | $400–$600 | $200–$290 |
| 2 | First refund offers: a losing qualifying bet comes back as bonus bets | BetRivers 100 % refund up to $100 / $250 / $500 depending on the state ($30–$230); in Arizona Desert Diamond ($120–$150), in Ohio betJACK ($20–$340) | $250–$500 | $30–$230 plus the state offers |
| 3 | The big refund offer, in five bets | FanDuel 100 % refund up to $200 × 5 ($500–$700) | $400–$1,000 | $500–$700 |
| 4 | Last welcome offers and first recurring promotions | bet365 100 % refund up to $1,000 ($350–$500); in Michigan Play Eagle ($280–$500); DraftKings and FanDuel profit boosts | up to $1,000 | $350–$500 |
| Total | First month in a state with the main sportsbooks, with enough capital to run two offers in parallel | $1,000–$1,500 | ||
In a state with fewer operators (New York, for example, has no bet365) the first month is closer to $600. With $100–$300 of starting capital you run the same offers one at a time and the first month closes lower, but the capital grows with every offer you complete. From the second month on, only the recurring promotions count.
How much capital and time do you need?
$100–$300 is enough to start: qualifying bets are small, and covering a bonus bet ties up about twice its value for a few hours. Refund offers need the refunded amount as bankroll ($250–$1,000) for a few days; if you do not have it, you do them later. The capital is not spent: it stays tied up until the game settles and comes back with the profit. On time: 1–2 hours a day in the first two weeks, because you are learning; then 30–45 minutes are enough to follow the recurring promotions. Bankroll management is the first topic to study after this guide.
Is matched betting legal in the US?
Yes, wherever online sports betting is legal. You bet only at sportsbooks licensed by your state and use the promotions they publish themselves; NinjaBet is a tool and education service and takes no bets. Sports betting has been regulated state by state since the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban in 2018: you must be 21 or older in almost every state and physically inside a state where the sportsbook is licensed when you bet. ProphetX is different: it is a prediction market regulated federally by the CFTC, open from 18, and its sports contracts are the subject of court cases between several states and the CFTC-regulated platforms, still unresolved in September 2026. Winnings are taxable income for the IRS and in most states, and because every bet is covered, the gross winnings a sportsbook reports can be much larger than your real profit: keep records. A sportsbook may limit the promotions or the account of a customer who only uses bonuses; that is a commercial decision allowed by its terms, not a penalty, and the verified funds of a real-money account are paid out. What are the risks and the most common mistakes?
The method removes the risk of the sporting result, not the risk of human error. Losses almost always come from here:
- Order not filled: on ProphetX the price moves before your order is taken and you are left uncovered. Check the order status every time and read what to do when an order is pending or partially filled.
- Terms not met: minimum odds, qualifying stake, excluded markets or payment methods, expiry of the bonus bet. Every offer card lists them; read them before you deposit.
- Prices different from the calculator: prices move. Check that the sportsbook and the prediction market show the prices you entered and correct them by hand.
- Wrong calculator mode: a bonus bet, a refund and a profit boost need different stakes. Select the mode the offer instructions name (Cash, Bonus, Refund, Rollover, Boost).
- Not enough liquidity: if the money available on the prediction market at that price is smaller than your stake, the order fills only in part. The Dutcher and ProphetX both show the available amount.
- Account limits: after several promotions a sportsbook can exclude you from bonuses. Diversify the sportsbooks and behave like an ordinary customer.

What do you need to start?
- Be 21 or older for the sportsbooks (a few states allow 18; ProphetX accepts users from 18) and be located in a state with legal online sports betting when you bet.
- A valid ID and your Social Security number, for the identity checks of the sportsbooks and of ProphetX: do them right away, before depositing.
- A payment method: debit card, PayPal or online banking (many sportsbooks and states do not accept credit cards; the offer card says which methods are excluded).
- $100–$300 of capital you can tie up for a few days.
- A computer: you work with several tabs open, and the phone is uncomfortable for that.

Frequently asked questions
Is matched betting gambling?
No. In gambling you risk money on an uncertain result; in matched betting you cover every outcome, so the sporting result does not matter. The profit comes from the bonus, not from luck. The operational risks described above remain.
How much do you really make?
The welcome offers available in your state are worth about $600–$1,500 of expected profit in total as of September 2026; then most users make $200–$500 a month from recurring promotions. It depends on your capital, your time and the number of sportsbooks licensed in your state.
Do I need ProphetX?
No, but it helps. You can cover every bet at a second sportsbook with the Dutcher and pay no commission; ProphetX usually offers better prices because users set them and there is no margin. Where ProphetX is not available, the second-sportsbook route is the only one.
Why is there no lay betting in the US?
No US operator offers a lay bet with a liability the way a European exchange does. On a prediction market such as ProphetX you take the opposite side of a market instead, which is a back bet on the other outcome, so the cover is always a back bet on a two-way market. That is why NinjaBet.com is built around the Dutcher rather than an OddsMatcher.
Can I use decimal odds instead of American odds?
Yes. The tools use American odds by default on ninjabet.com; you can switch to decimal in My Account, Settings, Odds format. The math is the same either way.
Can I do it from my phone?
The sportsbook apps work, but comparing prices, the calculator and the prediction market at the same time needs a computer. Many users keep the phone for the simplest recurring promotions.
Can I do a welcome offer twice, or use a family member's account?
No: one account per person per sportsbook. Opening a second account or using someone else's is multi-accounting and gets every account closed. See Can I use a family member's account?.
