EURO 2024

From June 14th until July 14th, the 24 best European nations will compete in 10 German cities – Berlin, Munich, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Gelsenkirchen, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Cologne and Leipzig.

The opening game between Germany and Scotland will take place on June 14th at Allianz Arena, Munich. The other teams in Group A are Hungary and Switzerland.

The EURO 2020 champions from Italy are expected to have a hard time in their group, taking on Spain, Croatia and Albania in Group B. The first games in that group are on June 15th with Spain vs Croatia and Italy vs Albania.

Another intriguing draw is Group D where the teams of France, the Netherlands, Poland and Austria compete against each other. Some of the other teams to keep an eye on include England, former finalists from EURO 2020, Belgium, Portugal and Serbia.

Copa America 2024

The summer calendar of the 2024 sports events is full of soccer. The 48th edition of the Copa America will take place in the United States from June 25th until July 14th.

16 teams are divided into 4 groups. The first two teams of each group qualify for the knockout stage. The final will be at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens Stadium, Florida.

The competition consists of 10 teams from CONMEBOL (South America’s governing body):

• Argentina
• Bolivia
• Brazil
• Chile
• Colombia
• Ecuador
• Paraguay
• Peru
• Uruguay
• Venezuela

And 6 teams from CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football):

• The USA
• Canada
• Mexico
• Jamaica
• Costa Rica
• Panama

Argentina, the defending champions and World Cup winners in Qatar, are definitely the firm favorites. However, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay and Colombia are not to be underestimated.

Roland Garros 2024

After all major clay court tennis tournaments are over, it’s time for the largest event. 

Roland Garros, also known as the French Open, is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments and is held annually in Paris, France. Established in 1891, it became a Grand Slam event in 1925 and was named after the French aviator Roland Garros. This is the only Grand Slam held on red clay courts. These courts slow down the ball and produce a high bounce, favoring baseline players and demanding exceptional endurance and strategy. 

The main event will take place from May 26th until June 9th. All major names are expected to take part in the tournament, including Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz. 

Another key player to keep an eye on is Alexander Zverev. He showed some amazing tennis and won the trophy from the ATP 1000 in Rome.

On the women’s side all eyes are definitely on Iga Swiatek. The Polish player had an incredible 6:2, 6:3 victory against Aryna Sabalenka in Rome. She showed some stunning tennis and everyone expects her to be the firm favorite in Paris.

Wimbledon, US Open and Other Tennis Tournaments

The list of the 2024 sports events doesn’t end here. The summer tennis calendar looks extremely promising with the remaining Grand Slam editions – Wimbledon and the US Open.

Held annually at the All England Club in London, Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, dating back to 1877. It is the only Grand Slam played on grass courts, which are known for their fast pace and low bounce, favoring players with strong serve-and-volley skills. Wimbledon is scheduled to take place from July 1 to July 14, 2024. The tournament is renowned for its traditions, including the all-white dress code for players and the consumption of strawberries and cream by spectators.

Following Wimbledon, the tennis tour shifts to North America. The US Open, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, is the final Grand Slam of the year and will run from August 26 to September 8, 2024. Known for its electric atmosphere and night matches under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium, the US Open is a favorite among fans and players alike. The hard courts at the US Open are fast and relatively neutral, providing a fair test for various playing styles.

In addition to the Grand Slams, several significant ATP tournaments are held during the summer. 

• Hamburg Open, ATP 500, from July 15th until July 21st.
• Washington DC Open, ATP 500 from July 29th until August 4th.
• Montreal Open, ATP 1000, from August 6th until August 12th.
• Cincinnati Open, ATP 1000, from August 12th until August 19th.

Other Football Tournaments and Competitions in Summer 2024

Although the major leagues in Italy, Spain, England and Germany are on a break, there are a number of competitions that don’t stop in the months of July and August. 

Campeonato Brasileiro

The Serie A, B and C of the Brazilian Championship (Campeonato Brasileiro) continue and are one of the most interesting competitions in the calendar of the 2024 sports events. Athletico Paranaense, Bahia and Flamengo have had a good start of the season, but it might be too early to celebrate.

Argentine Primera División

In the first phase of the Argentinian championship River Plate were exceptional, ending on top with just a single point lead. Now in the second phase, Argentinos Juniors and Barracas Central need to prove if their 2nd and 3rd positions were a surprise or not.

Major League Soccer

Soccer might be a bit underrated in the USA. However, with Leo Messi on the squad, Inter Miami are showing some astonishing results. Make sure you keep an eye on that league as well. 

European Tournaments Qualifiers

The European Champions League will not start before mid September 2024. However, there are three qualifying rounds and one play-off round taking place in the next few months:

• First Qualifying Round: Between July 9th and July 17th
• Second Qualifying Round:Between July 23rd and July 31st
• Third Qualifying Round: Between August 6th and August 13th
• Play-off Round: Between August 20th and August 28th

During this time the qualification for the other European Tournaments, Europa League and Conference League, will also take place.

Basketball Tournaments

The NBA playoffs are reaching their peak with the last games of the Eastern and the Western conference brackets. The Boston Celtics secured a clean 4:0 victory over the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference.

The Celtics won their first NBA playoffs back in 1957. At the moment they hold a total 17 titles. A win in the final series this year means they will take the lead in the all-time chart, leaving behind the LA Lakers. Could they really become the 2024 NBA champions?

In Spain the quarterfinals of the playoffs just came to an end. Unicaja, Real Madrid, UCAM Murcia and Barca move to the final 4. The next phase will feature more games as the format changes from best of 3 to best of 5. Will Barca manage to defend its title from 2023?

The German Basketball Bundesliga has also reached the semi final phase. Alba Berlin managed to secure their spot in just 3 games. Würzburg Baskets, Bayern Munich and Niners Chemnitz are the rest of the teams who continue after the quarterfinals. The tournament is planned to end by June 17th 2024.

Major League Baseball
